Brisbane is the capital city of state Queensland and third largest city in Australia. It is located on the Brisbane River, between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range. The city is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales from 1821 – 1825.
The settlement at Brisbane developed after an abandoned initial penal colony settlement at Redcliffe, 28 kilometers to north. The colony moved to the current location in 1825 and free settlers were permitted from 1842. It was chosen as capital city when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony in 1859.
