Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and is the fifth largest city in Australia. It is a city situated on the Adelaide Plains, between Gulf St. Vincent and Mount Lofty Ranges.
Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the consort of King William IV, this city was founded in 1836 as capital of the only freely-settled British province in Australia. Adelaide was shaped by religious freedom, political progressivism and civil liberties, that led to many reforms. Today Adelaide is a well known tourist destination that offers many vacation attractions and great accommodation in hotels and vacation rentals. Adelaide has a mild Mediterranean climate, meaning that most of the rain falls in the winter months. Frosts are rare and there is usually no appreciable snowfall, excepting Mount Lofty's region and some places in the Adelaide Hills.
