Brisbane is the capital city of state of Queensland and the third largest city in Australia. It is located on the banks of Brisbane River, between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range. The city is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales between 1821–1825, and is nowadays one of the best rated Australian destinations both for relaxing and for active holidays.
The actual city is developed close to the site of an abandoned penal colony at Redcliffe, 18 miles (28 kilometers) to north. Free settlers were permitted from 1842. The locality was chosen as capital city when state of Queensland has been proclaimed a separate colony in 1859.

Gallery of Modern Art is located next to the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Art Gallery. Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm and Judith Wright Center of Contemporary Arts on Brunswick Street feature various exhibitions and festivals of visual art, music, and dance.
