Brisbane is the capital city of state of Queensland and the third largest city in Australia. It is located on the shores of Brisbane River, between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range. The city is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales between 1821 – 1825.
Brisbane is developed close to the site of an abandoned penal colony at Redcliffe, 28 kilometers to north. Free settlers were permitted from 1842. It was chosen as capital city when state of Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony in 1859.
