Brisbane is the capital city of state of Queensland and the third largest city in Australia. It is located on the shores of Brisbane River, between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range. The city is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales between 1821 – 1825.

Brisbane is developed close to the site of an abandoned penal colony at Redcliffe, 28 kilometers to north. Free settlers were permitted from 1842. The settlement was chosen as capital city when state of Queensland has been proclaimed a separate colony in 1859.

Nowadays Brisbane is a modern city and top holiday spot in Australia, with popular tourist attractions. It features a large number of hotels, still sometimes is hard to find accommodation due to the large number of vacationers who spend holidays in the city during the peak season.

The most popular vacation spots in Brisbane include the South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland and the Botanic Gardens. In the suburb of Mount Coot-tha is located a popular state forest and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, which comprising also Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and a Japanese garden.

Brisbane has over 27 kilometers of bicycle pathways, mostly located near Brisbane River and in the city center. Besides Story Bridge and Portside WharfLone Pine Koala Sanctuary, visits to Brisbane Forest Park, located inside the city, are included in many tours in Brisbane. In surroundings are settled a few excellent hotels and vacation rental properties which offer high class accommodations.

Brisbane has many cultural attractions. Queensland Museum is located on the South Bank. Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, opened in December 2006, is one of the latest additions in the South Bank area and hosts famous modern art pieces.

GOMA is the largest modern art gallery in Australia and home to the Asia Pacific Triennial (ATP), which focuses on contemporary art from Asia and Pacific. In this gallery are also housed large events such as the Andy Warhol exhibition.

Gallery of Modern Art is located next to the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Art Gallery. Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm and Judith Wright Center of Contemporary Arts on Brunswick Street feature diverse exhibitions and festivals of visual art, music and dance.

With so many points of interest, Brisbane is certainly a good tourist spot for people seeking relaxing holidays. There are available numerous tours, while accommodation can be booked in a wide range of vacation rentals and hotels, some of them offering periodically cost-effective vacation deals.
