Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, the fifth largest city in Australia, and one of the most popular places to go on holiday in the country. It is situated on the Adelaide Plains, between Gulf St. Vincent and Mount Lofty Ranges.

Named in honor of Queen Adelaide, the consort of King William IV, this city was founded in 1836 as capital of the only freely-settled British province in Australia. Adelaide was shaped by religious and political freedom that led to many reforms. Frosts are rare and usually there is no appreciable snowfall, excepting Mount Lofty's region and some places in the Adelaide Hills, a tourist area with plenty of accommodations providing shelter to winter sports enthusiasts.
